WEEE Directive Is for Mandating Computer Disposal in Eco-friendly Ways

Every year, approximately one million tones of electrical and electronic equipments are thrown away by the office and home PC users in the UK. The figure is constantly growing up which is pretty alarming for the environment and the mankind as a whole. Back in January 2007, WEEE directive came into effect which is a set of stringent rules and regulations for computer disposal.

WEEE Directive-Definition and Explanation

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive is abbreviated as WEEE directive. The directive aims at growing mass awareness about the necessity of reduction of the electrical equipments production as well as espouses reuse and recycling of used and worn out computer parts. The WEEE also aims at engaging more and more IT business houses in green movements. They directive is aimed for increasing the awareness of the equipment manufacturer, wholesalers and resellers as well for green IT disposal.

WEEE Directive-How the Business Owners Are Affected?

WEEE Directive comprises of the Hazardous Waste Act 2005. As per the legislation, it is mandatory for large business houses that produce more than 500 kilograms of contaminating IT equipments to register with the Environment Agency of the UK. The Agency will then mark the company as a hazardous waste producer. This means, the company has to adhere to certain guidelines that may be intimated from time to time by the Agency for eco-friendly IT disposal.

General IT equipments that must go through eco-friendly methods of computer disposal are CRT monitors, lead acid batteries and fluorescent tubes. So if do not dispose of CRT monitors, lead batteries or fluorescent tubes you need not to register with the Agency. For ex ample, if you dispose of more than 40 CRT monitors per annum, you must register with the Agency. For businesses with multiple sites as well, if the cumulative disposal reaches the 500 kilograms benchmark, you need to register with the agency for safe and green computer disposal.
